The failed of the Apollo 13
Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the Service Module (SM) upon which the Command Module(CM) depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical need to jury-rig the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17. |
Apollo 14
Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the United States Apollo program, and the third to land on the Moon. It was the third mission to achieve lunar landing. The Apollo 14 was launched on January 31, 1971 and headed for the landing site, the Fra Mauro highlands. The Fra Mauro was the original destination for Apollo 13, which was launched 9 months earlier. However, it never reached the surface of the Moon due to an oxygen tank explosion in the Service Module (SM). The Fra Mauro region was found by stratigraphic data to be older than the Apollo 11 or 12 landing site. The region was one of the places of the prime scientific attention because it included the most exposed geological formation.
The experiments of Apollo 14 were not the same as the experiment planned for the Apollo 13, because 14 had the Modular Equipment Transporter (MET), which is a pull-cart. The Apollo 14 was the first and the only mission to use hand-driven cart . MET was used to carry their tools and instruments that they need to accomplish the experiments during EVA. Moreover, it carried the collected samples. The experiments included soil mechanics experiment, passive seismic experiment, and many other experiments.
